What I have found works for breastfeeding and what really doesn't

Breastfeeding is a very personal journey and it's not for everyone. I really despise people who say, "anyone can breastfeed they just need the right supports." This is bollocks. Breastfeeding doesn't work for everyone for a whole number of reasons and no woman should be made to feel guilty for not breastfeeding which SO many women do have.

Fed is best. Simple.

I am fortunate that my daughter latched straight away in hospital, she didn't have tongue tie and she's a pretty good feeder. This isn't the case for everyone. She has started to get a bit refluxy so I'm going to start keeping a food diary to see if I can find out her triggers. Probably the wine but she's going to have to suck that up as my mental health is important here too.

Below is another list of products I have found really helpful with breastfeeding so far and some to avoid!!

They have smashed the PR and marketing but by God they are terrible! They don't pump, you get hardly any milk out when they decide to work, they leak, the app doesn't work, they are SO expensive - the list goes on.

Please save your money! The bad reviews really are speaking the truth. I am sending mine back.

This is an amazing product. You'll be amazed how much milk you can get out and it's really good for using in tandem when you are breastfeeding on the other boob.

I have bought a second one for when I want to "pump and dump" if I'm out drinking, my birthday is today after all.

Read the instructions to make sure you're doing it properly and you're good to go. I wouldn't recommend using it for me than 10 minutes as the suction is strong and I've turned my nipples blue on a few occasions!

Spectra H2 Pump

I was recommended this pump by quite a few friends who had used it. It's a lot cheaper than the Medela and it's works really well.

It gets a really good amount of milk out in 10-20 minutes and they recommend not pumping for more than 20 minutes to avoid over stimulation and production.

It has a built in light with two brightness settings which is really useful when you're pumping at night. You can double or single pump.

Pumping bra

You need to get a bra that slots the pumps into to make life easier trust me! No one seemed to tell me this is a necessary purchase - they really are!

I found these good ones on Amazon and the clips are at the right height to be able to unclip them easily which too many feeding bras don't have. They're really high up which makes them so hard to do back up.

Milk storage bag

Still on the hunt for some decent reusuable milk storage bags. Have found some silicone ones but they're 2 for £10 and I use so many of them / want them for the freezer that doesn't seem very economical. If anyone has any good recommendations please let me know.

I have used all three of the below. I prefer the Spectra ones but the Lansinoh bags are the ones that you can pump directly into.

When pumping in the middle of the night though or if you're tired I recommend pumping into the bottles that come with the pump to avoid spills as they're a lot easier to do.

The nano bebe ones are a bit gimmicky as all milk storage bags lie flat really!

Adapter clips

These clever bits of kit mean you can pump straight into the milk storage bag rather than into a bottle and then pouring it into the bag which saves a bit on washing up.

You can't sterilise them in the microwave though as they have metal parts in

Steriliser & tablets

I have mentioned this steriliser before which my friend lent me but it's really awesome and cheap and fits a load in.

I also got these steriliser tablets from Tesco as they were really cheap and I thought good for on the go. Have used them once but I do prefer the microwave steriliser.

Tupperware box

I store all the bags in an airtight container in the fridge. That way if any of the bags leak, as they often do, it doesn't go everywhere. Also keeps things a lot tidier.

Silver Breast shields

I was loving these until I lost one of them and I haven't got round to ordering another one yet! You squeeze a few drops of breast milk in them when you put them on and they help to keep the nipples moist which helps them not to crack

Breast pads

I haven't used any breast pads yet as I haven't been getting leaky nipples. I have got these reusable ones though as back up.

Placenta pills

I got my placenta turned into capsules that I take three times a day and it was done by the amazing Tara Rivero Zeo. They are said to help with breast milk production among many other things. Could it be placebo possibly. Am I feeling good? Yes. Definitely no harm in taking them and if you look in nature the placenta is usually the main source nourishment for mammals after birth.

We are doing combi feeding either with breast milk in the bottles during the night and some formula too.

We were recommended by lots of people the MAM anti colic bottles and so far she's going really well with them. I haven't ever used the self sterilisation method for them as we whack them in the big steriliser but it will be good for travelling

Literally think Kendamil was the first one that came up when we Googled and it's bonus it's made in the Lake District where most of my family are from and live. She seems to like it!

Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine

Makes life so much easier when bottle feeding. We were lent ours and would recommend looking on FB marketplace / eBay etc for a second hand one as I don't think they're worth the full price. Especially as you have to buy filters to go inside them

Everyone recommended this but I haven't used it much.
